Exercise Performance and Breathing Patterns in Cystic Fibrosis
نویسنده
چکیده
where VE is pulmonary ventilation, VT the tidal volume (the volume of air inhaled and exhaled during one respiratory cycle) and f b the frequency of breathing. In normal subjects during exercise the increase in VE is achieved by increases in VT at low and moderate work load, up to 50-60% of vital capacity (Jones and Rebuck , 1979). This is achieved by gradual increases in end inspiratory lung volume to about 80% of total lung capacity (TLC) and reductions in end expiratory volume to about 40% of TLC (Cotes, 1979).

Exercise performance and breathing patterns in cystic fibrosis: male-female differences and influence of resting pulmonary function.
Despite improved prognosis for patients with cystic fibrosis (CF), they continue to suffer from progressive decline in pulmonary function and exercise tolerance. Beyond puberty, female patients have greater loss of pulmonary function and higher mortality than males, yet no one has studied male-female differences in exercise tolerance among patients. We therefore compared the responses to progre...
متن کاملExercise with incorporated expiratory manoeuvres was as effective as breathing techniques for airway clearance in children with cystic fibrosis: a randomised crossover trial.
QUESTION : Can a session of exercise with incorporated expiratory manoeuvres substitute for a session of breathing techniques for airway clearance in children with cystic fibrosis? Are children with cystic fibrosis as co-operative and satisfied with the exercise regimen as with the breathing techniques?. DESIGN Randomised, cross-over trial with concealed allocation and intention-to-treat anal...
متن کاملSupplemental oxygen and exercise performance in patients with cystic fibrosis with severe pulmonary disease.
Patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) and advanced pulmonary disease have pulmonary limitation of exercise, often associated with arterial oxygen desaturation. Improving oxygenation during exercise by providing supplemental oxygen may improve exercise performance in these patients. To test this, we performed graded exercise stress tests in 22 CF patients with severe pulmonary disease (mean PaO2, 6...
متن کاملBreathing pattern and chest wall volumes during exercise in patients with cystic fibrosis, pulmonary fibrosis and COPD before and after lung transplantation.
BACKGROUND Pulmonary fibrosis (PF), cystic fibrosis (CF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) often cause chronic respiratory failure (CRF). METHODS In order to investigate if there are different patterns of adaptation of the ventilatory pump in CRF, in three groups of lung transplant candidates with PF (n=9, forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV(1))=37+/-3% predicted, forced vital...
متن کاملEffects of chest physiotherapy and aerobic exercise training on physical fitness in young children with cystic fibrosis
BACKGROUND Cystic fibrosis is a multisystem disease where the main problems are existing in the respiratory system. Aerobic exercise programs are effective in increasing physical fitness and muscle endurance in addition to chest physiotherapy. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of chest physiotherapy and aerobic exercise training on physical fitness in young children ...
